Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a great garden design?

A great garden design should take into account factors such as the climate, soil type, and sun exposure of the area. It should also consider the maintenance requirements and budget of the client.

Ultimately, a great garden design is one that enhances the overall quality of life for the homeowner by providing a peaceful and rejuvenating space to enjoy nature and outdoor activities.

What does a garden designer do?

A garden designer is a professional who uses their expertise in horticulture, landscape architecture, and design principles to transform your garden inspiration into a stunning and functional outdoor space. They work closely with you to understand your vision, preferences, and requirements for your garden.

The garden designer brings their experience and knowledge to the table, ensuring that your ideas are not only visually appealing but also feasible and practical within the constraints of your space. They create detailed plans, sketches, and visualisations that consider factors such as plant selection, soil conditions, drainage, sun exposure, and hardscaping elements.

Furthermore, a garden designer applies their artistic and creative skills to design a garden that harmonises with the surrounding environment, complements the architecture of your home, and reflects your unique style and personality. They also consider long-term maintenance requirements and sustainability principles to ensure that your garden remains beautiful and functional for years to come.

What are the costs involved for a new garden?

The cost of a new garden depends on several factors, such as the size of the garden, the complexity of the design, the materials used, and the level of manual labour required.

Design labour is an essential factor that affects the cost of a new garden. A garden designer's expertise is necessary to create a well-designed outdoor space that meets your vision and requirements. They will prepare detailed plans, sketches, and visualisations that may require several hours of work.

Materials used in the garden, such as plants, hardscaping elements, irrigation systems, and lighting, also contribute to the total cost of the project. The type and quality of materials chosen can significantly impact the final cost.

The level of manual labour required for the project is another crucial factor that influences the cost. More complex garden designs that require significant excavation, leveling, or grading may need more manual labour than simpler designs.

It's essential to have a budget in mind before starting a new garden project. A garden designer can help you develop a budget based on your vision and requirements. They may also require a deposit to start the project.

How long does a garden build take?

For smaller garden projects, such as installing a new lawn or adding a few new plants, the construction process may take about 1-2 days to complete. These projects typically involve minimal excavation, hardscaping, and may require fewer workers to complete.

On the other hand, larger garden projects that require significant excavation, hardscaping, and planting can take longer to complete. For example, a garden construction project that involves elements such as paving, water features, retaining walls, and outdoor lighting can take up to two weeks or more to complete, depending on the complexity of the design.

A good gardener will communicate their process clearly with you, explaining the stages involved in the garden construction process and providing you with an estimated timeline for completion. They will keep you informed throughout the project, ensuring that you understand what is happening and what to expect.

What month is best to start a garden?

The ideal time to start a garden depends on several factors, including the climate and the type of plants you intend to grow.

For garden construction projects, it's best to work when it's dry to minimise soil compaction and allow for proper drainage. Therefore, it's best to avoid working in wet weather, especially if you need to excavate or level the ground.

For planting projects, the ideal time to start a garden depends on the climate and the type of plants you intend to grow. In general, planting during the dormant season, which is usually in late autumn or early spring, is best for most plants. During this time, the plants are not actively growing, allowing them to establish their roots in the soil and prepare for the growing season. This is also a good time to prepare the soil for planting.

However, a well-tended garden can survive and thrive even if planted during the summer months. Just be aware that new plants will require extra watering during hot and dry weather, and there may be water restrictions or hosepipe bans in effect.

It's also worth noting that some plants, such as vegetables and herbs, have specific planting times depending on the growing season and climate. It's best to research the ideal planting times for the plants you intend to grow and plan your garden accordingly.
